The social media is today one of the main forces in our lives. We look at it, learn from it and basically have our entire social life embedded in it.
The way we behave in social media, the items we look at and the people we follow say a lot about us and our culture.
For example, let's take a look at the 10 most popular Twitter accounts. this honorable list consists of 6 singers, one comedian and one trashy starlet. What does that say about us as a society? have we forgotten the important things in life? Does it really make sense that Kim Kardashiam West (#9 on the list) has more followers than CNN (#13 on the list)?
If you choose to look at this list from a cynic, pessimistic angel you will probably say that the world has become as superficial as can be. People only look for shallow entertainment and follow those starlets and pop stars that can offer them this type of fun.
However, let's try and give a different perspective to this issue. Is it possible that Twitter is not really a mirror to out society? that its entire existence is aimed at providing its users with the lowest form of entertainment? that the very same people who follow Katy Perry and Rihanna have other outlets for the more "cultural" "conscientious" parts of their lives?
We would love to think that this is the case. But unfortunately it does seem like the online and mobile world have reduced our attention spam and our interest to the shallow things in life. And the celebrity culture is definitely one of the main symbols of this phenomena.
Here are the 10 most followed Twitter accounts:
